BRUSSELS - The Nato council has authorised the commander of allied forces in Europe, Gen George Joulwan, to begin preparing to withdraw Nato led peacekeeping troops from Bosnia.

A Nato official said Gen Joulwan "has been authorised to work on the period from elections (in Bosnia on September 14th) to the end of the for mission" on December 20th.
