Alexandria - The discovery of a 2,200 year-old necropolis on the site of a massive road project in this Mediterranean port city has set the scene for a battle between ancient Egypt and the modern world.

The necropolis was discovered around one month ago during a dig at Gabbari, west of Alexandria's city centre, confirming the long-held suspicions of archaeologists, experts said yesterday. Now authorities have to decide whether to allow excavations to continue or to halt construction of the nearly-completed $450 million viaduct project for a ring road to the port for heavy vehicles. - (AFP)
