Efforts have resumed to find the body of Columba McVeigh who was abducted and killed by the IRA when he was 19 years old.
A new dig on the desolate and isolated Brogan mountain, on the Monaghan-Fermanagh border, has begun in recent days. McVeigh, who was from Castlecaulfield, Co Tyrone, was kidnapped from a street in Dublin in 1975.
Garda excavation teams have again moved on to the bog with heavy machinery, this time accompanied by experts from Britain who specialise in locating human remains.
This is the third dig at Bragan. The last, in 2003, went on for two weeks but nothing was found. During the previous excavations the victim's mother, Vera McVeigh, was in attendance but she died during the summer.
She had campaigned for years for the return of her son's body. Yesterday, Columba's brother, Oliver, was in attendance representing the family but he was not available for comment.
Gardaí were accompanied by archaeologists from the North and a forensic team.
