WASHINGTON, DC - More than 200 hours of previously unreleased tapes made by Richard Nixon in the White House reveal that the disgraced former US president ordered that his incriminating Watergate record-ings be destroyed in April 1973 - a move that might have prevented his being forced to resign the following year - but then changed his mind.
The tapes also show Mr Nixon plotting in 1971 to promote Senator Edward Kennedy and the Rev Jesse Jackson as rival candidates to the Democrat he most feared as presidential challenger in 1972, the late Senator Edmund Muskie. - (Guardian Service)
