Gardaí raided the home of obstetrician Dr Michael Neary earlier this week as part of an investigation into missing medical files.

Officers from the Dublin-based National Bureau of Criminal Investigation entered his house at Monasterboice at around 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday and searched the premises for around three hours.

At the same time gardaí with a search warrant raided the house of a colleague of Dr Neary's, Ms Sheila Martin, a member of the Louth-Meath Health Group. They seized a computer and a number of documents.

Dr Neary, who was found guilty of professional misconduct in relation to the removal of wombs from 10 patients, declined to comment on the search when contacted by The Irish Times.

"I have received legal advice that I should not comment," he said yesterday.

In total, at least 65 women claim the Drogheda-based obstetrician performed unnecessary Caesarean hysterectomies on them up to 1998. Dr Neary rejects any wrongdoing and is expected to contest the remainder of the cases.

Patient Focus, a group which represents many of the women who underwent Caesarean hysterectomies at the hospital, has expressed concern at the missing records.

Ms Martin, meanwhile, said she was "shaken" by the raid and insisted she had nothing to hide.

"They said they were looking for theatre registers. I was being accused of theft. I don't work in a hospital, I wouldn't have access to those records. They went through my attic, outdoor house, everywhere, and they seized my computer," Ms Martin said.

"I felt completely violated. We weren't allowed to make phone calls, except to a solicitor. I don't blame the gardaí, they were doing their job. I didn't see the warrant until they left and saw it was related to theft."

The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation yesterday confirmed that the houses had been searched as part of an investigation into medical records.
