One person was killed and several others seriously injured when two trains collided today in a rail tunnel near the Italian border in southeast France, police said.

The regional express trains were travelling between Nice on the Mediterranean coast and the Italian town of Cuneo when they crashed in a tunnel near the town of Tende.

State rail operator SNCF confirmed the crash but was unable to give further details.
