A common infectious micro-organism, has been linked to heart disease in research by scientists in Canada, the United States and Austria and published in the journal Science.

Dr Kurt Bachmaier and colleagues showed can provoke an autoimmune response against the heart muscle because of a close similarity between two proteins in the heart and the micro-organism. The body's immune system can't detect the difference and attacks both chlamydia and heart tissues.
