Kiev - A prominent Ukrainian opposition leader said yesterday she wanted the ousted prime minister, Mr Viktor Yushchenko, for president and announced plans for a national referendum to try to topple incumbent Mr Leonid Kuchma.

Ms Yulia Tymoshenko, one of the leaders of an informal alliance of opposition groups dedicated to ousting Mr Kuchma, said Mr Yushchenko was the man to lead Ukraine.
