Swimming: Michael Phelps' quest for a record eight gold medals at the World Swimming Championships ended today after the United States were disqualified from the men's 400 metre medley relay.

The 21-year-old Phelps had put himself in contention for a seventh gold as he advanced to the 400m individual medley final.

Having already won a record-equalling six golds in Melbourne he was expected to make it eight today but has now lost his chance after butterflyer Ian Crocker dove in too early with Scott Usher still to complete his breaststroke leg.
