Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers in Derry have arrested a man after discovering a mortar bomb and a launcher tube.

The device was found in the garage of a house on Elmwood Terrace in the mainlynationalist Bogside area.

The PSNI were today linking the find to dissident republican paramilitaries.

A number of families on Tír Chonall Avenue and on Elmwood Avenue were evacuated while a security operation was carried out.

Police said they were stoned and petrol bombs were thrown during the operation and follow-up searches.
