ROME - Italy's two main political alliances have failed to agree on how to form the next government, the leader of one of the groupings said.

Mr Romano Prodi, leader of a centre left coalition, made the remarks after meeting former prime minister Mr Silvio Berlusconi, head of a right wing grouping.
