Fine Gael TD John Perry has refused to express confidence in the party's general secretary after being added to the party's general election ticket in Sligo-Leitrim.

Mr Perry had taken a High Court challenge against the party over an October selection convention at which he failed to secure a place on the constituency ticket.

The Sligo-Leitrim TD said a wrong had been done and he could not rest if he accepted the verdict without question.

He said: “This decision has ensured I am vindicated. I will work with the Fine Gael organisation to ensure we win the two seats from the Sligo-Leitrim.

‘Huge role’ of constituents

“I would like to acknowledge the huge role of my constituents - the amount of mass cards, bouquets and candles that have been lit right around the constituency in ensuring justice would prevail.”

Mr Perry said he supported the Taoiseach and would always back the person voted leader of the party.

However, he declined to express confidence in the party's general secretary, Tom Curran.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mr Perry said: “That is not a question for me to answer here today. The situation has been resolved.”

Mr Perry had claimed the convention result of last October should be set aside because of serious irregularities in how it was run.

Fine Gael’s executive council is to consider a recommendation on Wednesday night to add Mr Perry.

The recommendation to the executive council will be made by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
