Former primary school principal Jim Daly did something unusual for someone of his profession seeking a Dáil seat. The Clonakilty man (43) resigned his post completely, not leaving a substitute teacher in a potentially permanent limbo. He topped the poll at his first attempt in 2011 and has comfortably retained his seat this time around. And while he has an empathy with teachers, he is not shy about criticising the profession when he sees the necessity. He has spoken regularly on education matters, has raised issues linked to small and medium-size enterprises and pushed for fast track Government funding for flood-affected areas. A county councillor for the Skibbereen electoral area, he topped the poll in the 2009 local election when he retained his seat and served as chairman of Cork County Council. He is a member of the Oireachtas education committee and has had the Taoiseach's ear on education matters. One of 11 siblings, he is married with four sons. – MARIE O'HALLORAN
