Poor weather conditions today restricted the search for the bodies of seven fishermen missing off the south coast to the shoreline.

A spokeswoman said around 140 Coastguard personnel and public volunteers took part in today's search which has now been called off for the evening.

The Pere Charles trawler sank just over two miles south of Hook Head a week ago en route to Dunmore East with the loss of all five crew.

Hours later a second vessel, the Kinsale-based Honeydew II,  sank off Mine Head with the loss of two of its four crew.

The extreme weather prevented navy divers from examining the wreck of the Pere Charles  which is lying in some 35 metres of water off the coast.

Divers reached the wreck yesterday but were unable to gain access to the vessel because of the way the trawler was lying on the seabed.

The chances of resuming a full sea search tomorrow appear limited with storm force 10 winds and seven-metre high swells forecast.

Meanwhile eight crew onboard a trawler off the Donegal coast had to be towed towards shore today after getting into trouble when nets caught in its propeller.

The Catherine R  vessel was fishing grounds 17 miles north west of Arranmore Island when it developed difficulties.

As it was being towed by a lifeboat from Arranmore to nearby Burtonport, the tow is understood to have broken.

But the Coastgaurd said this evening that it had regained control of the vessel and was currently attempting to anchor the boat in the vicinity of the port. A spokeswoman also said the crew had now left the vessel and were not in any danger.

Yesterday two men involved in the search had to be rescued by a rescue helicopter yesterday after their fishing vessel sank east of Tuskar Rock lighthouse.
