The Electricity Supply Board has been working to restore supply to more than 8,000 homes who experienced outages after last night’s storm force winds.

A spokeswoman for the ESB said crews had been working through the night, and just 50 homes were still without power at lunchtime today.

Castlebar and Ballina in Co Mayo were worst affected by the power cuts.

In an unrelated outage, 1,500 homes in Kanturk in Co Cork lost power because of a damaged electricity cable.

The spokeswoman said power should be restored to all affected homes by this afternoon.
