Nicosia - The European Commission President, Mr Romano Prodi, expressed regret yesterday that Turkish Cypriots had spurned a UN proposal for peace talks on the divided island.

But Mr Prodi, on a two-day visit to Cyprus, sent a strong message that EU membership front-runner Cyprus would join the EU in its next wave of expansion, despite its division.
