Rome - Queen Elizabeth arrived in Rome yesterday at the start of a four-day state visit to Italy, the highlight of which will be an audience with Pope John Paul in the Vatican this morning, Paddy Agnew reports.

Although the queen holds the title of Supreme Governor of the Church of England, she will meet the Pope in her role as head of state. They are expected to discuss a broad range of issues including the Middle East crisis and Northern Ireland.
