Gardaí are investigating separate armed robberies yesterday in which a bank and a post office were targeted.

The bank raid was in Kilkenny city, where two men armed with knives held up the Allied Irish Bank on Dublin Road at about 4.30pm, before escaping with an undisclosed sum of money.

The robbers left the scene in a silver Volkswagen Golf, with a 00 Dublin registration, driven by a third person.

Earlier, in Co Roscommon, two men raided a post office at Ballyfarnon, using what detectives believe was a concealed weapon. It was the second post office raid in the county in two days, but gardaí say they have no reason at this stage to believe the events were related.
