The Taoiseach said measures to reduce the cost of tribunals would be introduced after the passage through the Oireachtas of a Bill providing for a new format for inquiries. The Bill is currently before the Dáil.

He was replying to the Labour leader, Mr Pat Rabbitte, who had asked what Mr McCreevy had meant when he told the Fianna Fáil Ardfheis that he would introduce measures to control the costs of tribunals.

"I understand he might want to divert attention from the proceedings at certain tribunals. But surely this is the same Minister for Finance who cleared the proposal from the then attorney general that we increase the allowance to lawyers per day by €800."
