A 38-year-old Cork man has been remanded on bail after he was charged over the weekend following a drugs seizure in Co Cork on Saturday morning.

Martin Whelehan, Castlemanor, Carrignavar, faces charges relating to a 100kg cannabis seizure by the Cork City divisional drugs squad following a search of a van at 10.30am at Tower near Blarney.

At a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday night, Mr Whelehan was charged with possession and possession for sale or supply of cannabis at Tower on April 8th.

Garda Geraldine Daly of Anglesea Street Garda station gave evidence of arresting and charging Whelehan. He replied "No comment" to all charges.

Det Insp Tom Myers said he had no objection to bail, provided the court fixed a substantial independent surety while he also asked that Whelehan surrender his passport and sign on three times a week at Gurranabraher Garda station.

Judge Uinsinn MacGruairc accepted Mr Whelehan had family in Cork and ties to the jurisdiction and he remanded the accused on his own bond of €9,000 and an independent surety of €30,000.

He also ordered Mr Whelehan to surrender his passport to Anglesea Street Garda station and to sign on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Gurranabraher Garda station.

Judge MacGruairc, who had earlier granted Mr Whelehan free legal aid and appointed solicitor Donal Daly to represent him, then remanded Mr Whelehan on bail to appear again before Cork District Court this morning.
