Jim Kemmy was one of those rare politicians who rise above ideological and party political divisions and inspire universal warmth and admiration. Among his many commitments he served as chair of the Art Advisory Committee of the Limerick City Council and was a notable supporter of many artists on an individual level.

It's appropriate, then, that Limerick has chosen to honour his memory with an annual exhibition at the Limerick City Gallery. The first show, Remember Jim Kemmy Exhibition: Contemporary Juxtapositions, opened last night.

It juxtaposes works from the Gallery's permanent collection with new pieces by 20 invited artists made in response to a work of their choice in the collection. They include Eileen Coates, Tom Fitzgerald, Mike Fitzpatrick, Charles Harper, Gavin Hogg, David Lilburn, Deirdre O'Mahony, Paul O'Reilly, John Shinnors and Lorraine Wall. The exhibition runs until November 9th.
