A Donegal man was shot dead in Philadelphia last week as he tried to tackle two armed thieves who had just robbed his construction business.
Mr Martin McConigley, from Fanad, was shot a number of times in his car as he chased the two gunmen on Friday afternoon, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.
Mr McConigley's business partner, Mr Sean Clinton, had been waiting for him at their office when the robbers held him up at gun-point. They locked Mr Clinton in a garage and left with the company's payroll. Mr McConigley arrived just as the men were fleeing, police said.
Mr McConigley was shot dead through his windscreen as he gave chase, said Capt James Brady, of the Philadelphia homicide squad.
Mr Tom Conaghan, director of the Philadelphia Immigration Resource Center, said the city's Irish community was stunned by the brutal shooting. Mr McConigley was married with a six-month-old son. "He was a good, humorous man, he enjoyed life," Mr Conaghan said. His body will be flown back to Ireland. Detectives are actively working on leads in the investigation. "We have a sense of direction on this. We don't think it was a murder mystery. We believe somebody had been watching them," Capt Brady said.
