Bucharest - Romania's embattled Prime Minister, Mr Victor Ciorbea, has defied rebels within his own government demanding his resignation and yesterday vowed to stay in office even with a minority administration to pursue reforms.

The Social Democrats - the second largest of four parties in the coalition - have threatened to leave the government as early as tomorrow unless Mr Ciorbea is replaced.
