Four Roma gypsies were released from detention yesterday after the State undertook before the High Court that it would not deport them, pending the hearing of their challenge to deportation orders.

The four, from Romania, were among a group of about 60 people whom the State planned to deport last week. Most of the other deportations went ahead.

The four people, a husband and wife and a mother and son, have brought judicial review proceedings challenging the lawfulness of orders for their deportation. They are to sign on at their local garda stations, pending the outcome of the judicial review proceedings.

Meanwhile proceedings in which a Roma mother and daughter who are challenging deportation orders were also before the High Court yesterday but were adjourned until Wednesday next.
