More than €5.3 million was raised for charitable causes in the RTÉ People In Need Telethon, which came an end in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The six-hour show included an alternative talent contest, won by the Sligo Clapping Society, and an auction of items donated by celebrities.

A Rolls Royce belonging to Michael Flatley, in which the performer claimed to have had "a lot of fun in", fetched €85,000.

Actress and singer Eileen Reid won the battle of broadcasters on the week-long radio station Charity 252, raising €50,000 in the process through sponsors.

The funds raised from the telethon will be distributed to a variety of charities, including those working with the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, the elderly and people with mental disabilities.

Describing the event as a "wonderful success", the director general of RTÉ, Mr Cathal Goan, said: "It has created broadcasting events bringing communities together and celebrating those who work tirelessly for others ... I hope that the money raised will make a real difference to the lives of many people."
