A call by Kerry Sinn Féin TD Mr Martin Ferris to extend the salmon season in the country's biggest commercial salmon fishing area for an extra two weeks in August will not be endorsed by the South Western Regional Fisheries Board.

Mr Ferris said fishermen were concerned that the late arrival of salmon on the west coast would mean they would be unable to fill quotas.

The season for commercial fishermen is due to close at the end of July.

However, the chief executive of the South Western Regional Fisheries Board, Mr Aidan Barry, said that while salmon were running late, he expected fishermen to reach quotas.
