Gardaí have called off the search for an Englishman missing since April and now feared dead.

Tommy Thompson, 59, originally from Yorkshire, worked as a plasterer in Portlaoise, Co Laois, before his disappearance on April 21st.

Searches along a road in the Irish midlands between Portlaoise and nearby village Stradbally were suspended last night after gardaí failed to find any trace of Mr Thompson.

It's understood there are no plans to resume the search any time soon.
