Senator George Mitchell, the Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, yesterday received an award from Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on behalf of the college.
The university's palaeoecology centre, which provides a unique dating capability to historians and archaeologists, was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.
"I am delighted and honoured to receive this award on behalf of Queen's. This is a well-deserved recognition of the university's role as a world leader in key areas of research and of the impact of academic research on enhancing our understanding of the world in which we live," Senator Mitchell said.
