The United Nations war crimes tribunal has acquitted Sefer Halilovic, the highest-ranking Bosnian Muslim yet to stand trial in The Hague, of war crimes.

"The accused is found not guilty and therefore acquitted of murder, violations of the laws or customs of war and it is ordered that he be released immediately," the presiding judge said in court today.

The wartime Muslim commander was accused of failing to prevent a massacre of Bosnian Croats in 1993.
