Seven families forced from their homes in Larne

Seven families are to leave their homes in Larne, Co Antrim, after what the RUC describes as "blatantly sectarian" attacks

Seven families are to leave their homes in Larne, Co Antrim, after what the RUC describes as "blatantly sectarian" attacks. Two men were injured in the attacks on Tuesday night in the mixed Seacourt Estate.

Locals claimed nationalists were involved. A Protestant man was treated in hospital for pellet wounds to his head and back when he was shot in Seacliff Road. Another man was injured in a petrol bomb attack.

Up to 20 people were involved in an arson attack which gutted a house in Britannia Crescent.

Ms Ann Carson said the trouble began after she confronted local nationalist youths over the flying of Tricolours outside her house. Protestants in the area had agreed not to put up loyalist flags during the marching season.

Ms Carson then erected a Union flag outside her house. "The flag was only up for two minutes where three masked men came to the house and kicked the door. They took the flag down and two others with baseball bats smashed my car and slashed the tyres." She said a crowd then surrounded her and after she left the house was petrol-bombed.

The attacks were condemned by DUP councillor Mr Jack McKee. The Sinn Fein chairman, Mr Mitchel McLaughlin, said if nationalists were involved in the attacks they should "immediately desist from this type of activity".

Two men have been shot and one beaten in separate paramilitary-style attacks.

A 17-year-old man is in hospital after being shot in both ankles in the nationalist Poleglass estate on the outskirts of west Belfast. He was taken from a house by at least three men at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday and shot behind Woodside Close.

Another man has been taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. Police said they believed he was shot at Church Lane, near Lisburn, Co Antrim, at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

In Omagh, Co Tyrone, a 26-year-old man was attacked by masked assailants with baseball bats. The man suffered head and leg injuries in the attack, which took place at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday at Mullaghmore Drive.
