Sinn Féin is to host a series of seven public meetings which, the party says, forms part of its public consultation on policing before the special ardfheis on January 28th.

Gerry Adams will chair the meetings which begin in Toome, Co Derry, on Saturday afternoon.

Further meetings will be held on a daily basis in Galbally, Co Tyrone; Newcastle and Newry, Co Down; Ballyconnell, Co Cavan; west Belfast and Derry.

Others could be added to the list and internal consultations will take place elsewhere in the country.

"These meetings will provide an opportunity for ordinary members of the public to come along and engage in this crucial debate," said Sinn Féin chairwoman Mary Lou McDonald at a press conference at the party's Falls Road headquarters in Belfast yesterday.

"We want all points of view." She stressed that the meetings will feature local Sinn Féin representatives, but the focus of them will be to engage the wider public.

"It is a huge moment for republicans," she added.

Ms McDonald said: "It is for the police service in the first instance to win the confidence of the community, but we have taken an unprecedented step, a unilateral act you might say, and we are saying clearly that now is the moment for republicans to engage with policing in the North. It is as simple as that. We are equally clear in saying that it must be accountable, democratic, civically driven."

The Northern Secretary Peter Hain has written to the parties, insisting that the deadlines for the holding of elections to an Assembly and for powersharing cannot and will not be altered.

"There is only one chance to get devolution up and running and that is March 26th. Everyone involved needs to understand that," he said in his letter.
