A man in his 20s who was shot in the chest in Limerick yesterday has declined to make a statement to gardaí.

The shooting happened in Delmege Park, Moyross, on the north side of Limerick city shortly before 2am yesterday.

A lone gunman knocked on the victim's door and fired a shot when he answered.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital after neighbours alerted gardaí.

However, it is understood that he declined medical treatment for injuries which were described as "non-life threatening" and later discharged himself from hospital.

It is also understood that he failed to make a statement to gardaí.

The scene was sealed off yesterday for technical examination and a Garda investigation is under way.

Gardaí at Mayorstone believe the shooting is linked to ongoing feuding between criminal factions on the north side of the city.

They have appealed for witnesses to the shooting to contact Mayorstone Garda station.
