Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Philip Brady described Mr Kiernan’s death as “a tragedy for the parish.”

“He was a quiet, respectable man who was well regarded in the community and will be hugely missed,” said Mr Brady.

“The accident that happened today has shown us we can never take farm safety for granted and how dangerous working on a farm can be,” said Mr Brady.

This is the second farm fatality this year. In January, a man in his 60s died in Co Kilkenny when a loader fell on top of him.

Last year, 17 people died in farming related incidents.
