Kieran Mulvey, former director general of the Workplace Relations Commission, has been asked by RTÉ to advise it on the terms of independent review of gender equality within the company.
Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Siptu working in RTÉ met on Thursday to discuss concerns about gender and equality issues.
At the meeting, staff agreed to call on RTÉ to publish a gender breakdown of pay grades and remuneration data within the next fortnight.
The meeting was called to allow staff to express their views ahead of formal engagement by the trade unions with RTÉ management.
In a statement after the meeting, an RTÉ spokeswoman confirmed Mr Mulvey would provide an independent overview of the gender review process. “Based on the review he will make recommendations as appropriate. We will be finalising the terms of reference of the review over the coming days.”
Last week, the BBC was forced to disclose the salaries of its top presenters as part of its new royal charter agreement with the UK government prompting debate both in the UK and Ireland about the gender pay gap in broadcasting.
