Cricket: South Africa captain Graeme Smith hit 85 to guide his side to a series-levelling seven-wicket victory over West Indies in the second Test at Cape Town.

After the Proteas bowled the tourists out for 262 in their second innings, Smith took charge to help South Africa to a decisive 186 for three that secured victory shortly after the scheduled close of day four.

West Indies had put up brave resistance earlier in the day as Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit an unbeaten 70 and formed a 70-run partnership with captain Chris Gayle (38) for the last wicket.

The day started badly for West Indies as they resumed on 96 for four and lost Gayle fourth ball as he retired hurt with a fractured thumb.

Dwayne Bravo came in but was out for 12 after flicking a wicked delivery from Andre Nel off his gloves into the grateful hands of Smith.

West Indies were then reeling on 133 for six when Rawl Lewis was taken at short leg by Hashim Amla. Jerome Taylor went for 21 after lunch as he edged a Dale Steyn delivery to Jacques Kallis at second slip.

With the visitors wobbling on 166 for seven, the hosts took the new ball and it paid immediate dividends as Daren Powell fell next over when he found Smith at slip off Steyn.

Fidel Edwards was then out for a career-best Test score of 21 after he tried to launch Nel over mid-off and Paul Harris made an excellent diving catch.

Gayle returned and smashed Makhaya Ntini for four in his first ball back at the crease before hitting two fours and a huge six in succession off Nel in the next over. Chanderpaul then reached his 44th Test fifty before Gayle eventually ended his and West Indies' innings when he went for another big shot and was caught by Harris.

South Africa made a confident start to their chase of 185 to win but Smith was dropped on 18 by Marlon Samuels after he attempted a risky shot off the bowling of Taylor.

However, three overs later the visitors had their breakthrough as AB de Villiers went for 23 when he miscued a pull off Bravo straight to substitute fielder Darren Sammy.

Amla helped the Proteas move within 45 runs of their target before he was superbly caught by Gayle on 37 after he prodded at the bowling of Lewis.

Kallis (22 not out) and Ashwell Prince (12no) saw the hosts home with Kallis hitting the winning runs with a four through mid-wicket off Lewis.
