Colombo - Sri Lanka's ruling People's Alliance coalition emerged yesterday as the winner of this week's general election with 107 seats. However, it fell short of an absolute majority, ensuring a hung parliament.
The main opposition United National Party won 89 seats in the 225-member parliament after Tuesday's elections which independent monitors said were rocked by murders, bomb blasts and rigging. The remaining seats were shared by the leftwing People's Liberation Front, and minority Tamil and Muslim parties.
