Cricket: Sri Lanka chose to bat first on a sunny morning in Jamaica for today's World Cup semi-final against New Zealand but were swiftly on the back foot after losing the wicket of Sanath Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya was bowled by James Franklin for just one run as the 1996 Cup winners struggled on 16 for 1. However,  Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara have since steadied the ship as Sri Lanka reached 60 after 12 overs.

Sri Lanka chose pace bowler Dilhara Fernando ahead of young all-rounder Farveez Maharoof in a line-up which was otherwise as expected. Strike bowler Lasith Malinga was back after three matches out with an ankle injury.

New Zealand, meanwhile, chose Jeetan Patel as a second spinner alongside Daniel Vettori in an attack with just two frontline seam bowlers in Shane Bond and James Franklin.
