A man found with serious stab wounds to his leg in Swords, Co Dublin, in the early hours of yesterday morning has died from his injuries in the city's Mater Hospital.
Gardai were last night questioning two men in relation to the killing. The suspects, aged 24 and 19, were being held at Swords and Malahide Garda stations.
The victim, who was from Latvia, will not be named until his relatives have been informed. He was one of a number of people to be stabbed in three separate incidents in Dublin over the bank holiday weekend He was discovered with stab wounds to his right leg at a house at Oaklands Avenue at approximately 3am yesterday.
He was brought by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, and was later transferred to the Mater where he underwent a number of blood transfusions. However, he died at around 10pm last night.
A Garda press office spokeswoman said detectives had spoken to a number of witnesses.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information concerning the attack to contact them at Swords or any garda station.
In another incident, a 19-year-old male was stabbed in the back at McIntosh Park, Pottery Road, Kill o' the Grange, Dún Laoghaire, at approximately 4am yesterday.
The man was injured after an altercation among a group of youths. He was taken to St Vincent's hospital where he is believed to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
A 16-year-old youth was arrested for questioning following the incident. He was released from Garda custody last night. A file on the matter is being prepared for the DPP.
In another attack around 4am, three male youths suffered minor stab wounds after a row broke out on Tubber Lane in Lucan.
Officers are investigating the incident but it is understood that none of those involved wished to make a complaint.
The latest stabbing incidents follow a series of knife attacks in recent weeks.
Last month, a 27-year-old journalist with Newstalk radio station was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and shoulder as she walked home alone on the Lourdes Road in Dublin at 4.30am.
Mairéad O'Dwyer (27) underwent seven hours of life-saving surgery in St James's Hospital after she was stabbed just yards from her home in the Coombe area of Dublin.
A 21-year-old Polish man appeared in court last week charged in connection with the attack. Leszek Jarosz (21) appeared before Kilmainham District Court on a charge of assault causing serious harm and two counts of robbery.
On Saturday, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was among the mourners at the funeral of 18-year-old schoolboy Seán Nolan in Dublin. Mr Nolan, a keen sportsman from Griffith Court, Fairview, was stabbed to death on Waterloo Road on the south side of the city after a row broke out at about 4am on Saturday, May 26th last.
A 17-year-old schoolboy has since been charged in connection with his death. A large group of mourners, including family, friends and teammates of the deceased attended the funeral ceremony at the church of St Vincent de Paul in Marino.
Gardaí are not conducting a specific operation to combat knife crime. However officers point out that its Operation Anvil does target this type of activity. The Dublin-based operation, which was set up in May 2005, includes extensive additional overt patrolling and static checkpoints by uniformed mobile and foot patrols.
These are supported by armed, plain-clothes patrols.
