ESB crews were last night working to restore electricity in Naas, Galway, Ennis, Clonmel and Arklow. An ESB spokeswoman said the crews expected that power would be restored to 95 per cent of affected customers by late last night.

Driving conditions on the M50 in Dublin were particularly difficult, with flooding at the Blanchardstown exit and the Naas Road exit. There was also heavy flooding in Stepaside and Kilternan.

In Cork, a roof blew off a derelict building in Ballindangan, blocking the road for several hours. Heavy flooding in Ballinrobe and Kilmaine in Mayo caused problems for motorists while the Sligo to Grange road was also affected.Met Éireann says the bad weather is expected to continue over the coming days, with sleet and snow a possibility in some parts.

Meanwhile, a truck driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving yesterday evening after an accident at Dromad, outside Dundalk. Seven vehicles were involved in the pile-up and 16 people sustained injuries. The accident happened when a truck hit a car travelling in the same direction. Five other vehicles became involved in the pile-up. The accident caused delays of up to three hours for motorists.
