Ryanair has cancelled all flights to and from Charleroi airport until next Monday following a strike by personnel at the Brussels airport.

The strike by security staff at the airport, which is located just over 40km outside the Belgian capital, is expected to affect the travel plans of more than 15,000 passengers.

The security staff, who withdrew their service yesterday without notice, are employed by the Walloon ministry of transport.

All flights have been cancelled up to 2pm on Monday, following the failure of negotiations between the security staff and the Walloon government to end the strike.

Ryanair yesterday issued an apology to all affected passengers.

It blamed the cancellation of flights on "the failure of the [ Belgian] ministry of transport and infrastructure to resolve this strike action or to implement any practical contingency measures".

The airline operates a number of flights from both Dublin and Shannon to Charleroi on a weekly basis.

Intending passengers who are booked to travel on any cancelled flights may rebook free of charge on www.ryanair.com or through the Ryanair call centre on 0032-16271006.
