Ireland's budding media stars were rewarded at the annual Student Media Awards in Dublin last night.
Organisers said prizes were spread more evenly throughout the colleges than in previous years but UCD and Trinity again dominated the major awards, with the Trinity News claiming the prestigious newspaper of the year award.
David Molloy of the Trinity News was named journalist of the year while Stephen Carroll of UCD's University Observer won the editor of the year prize.
The 3 Student Media Awards are open to third-level students in Ireland and Northern Ireland and reward works in areas such as journalism, film, broadcasting, photography and multimedia.
Other award winners last night included UCC's Aileen Lee (radio production, news), Dermot Culhane of Limerick Senior College (Photographer of the Year), Paul Schwer of Griffith College (TV production), DIT's Sarah-Jane Fortune (short film) and DCU for magazine of the year.
The event was hosted by Après Match comedian Barry Murphy and attended by some 900 students at Tripod on Harcourt Street. Colman Byrne, managing director of oxygen.ie, which has organised the awards since 2001, said the standard was improving each year.
Judges for the various awards included Eoin McVey, managing editor of The Irish Times, and comedian Colin Murphy.
