Jakarta - Indonesia's President Suharto (76) went on television twice over the weekend to demonstrate his recovery from a recent illness in an attempt to prevent further attacks on the economy by currency and stock traders when the markets open today. But sources said he is still very unwell.
Mr Suharto's speech was slurred and he moved little as he was shown playing with his pet mynah bird in his garden and revving the engine of his Harley-Davidson motorbike. Last Tuesday rumours swept regional financial markets that he had suffered a stroke and intensified on Friday after it was announced that he would not attend a summit of Asian leaders today.
