The directors of two rival ferry companies in Doolin, Co Clare, have been summoned to appear in the District Court over an alleged breach of the peace at Doolin last summer, it emerged yesterday.

In response to tensions last season gardaí placed patrols at Doolin pier to prevent an escalation of a dispute between Doolin Ferries Ltd and Aran Islands Fast Ferries Ltd, which started ferrying passengers to the Aran Islands for the first time last year. After a Garda investigation, the director of Doolin Ferries Ltd, Mr Bill O'Brien of Kilfenora, and the director of Aran Islands Fast Ferries Ltd, Mr Dick Grant of Lahinch Caravan Park, have been summonsed to appear at Lisdoonvarna District Court on May 18th.

Mr O'Brien is facing a summons for allegedly causing a breach of the peace at Ballaghaline, Doolin, on July 18th. Mr Grant is facing a similar summons relating to August 4th, when he is accused of using or engaging in insulting behaviour or words with intent to cause a breach of the peace.

Mr Grant is facing a second summons of being the owner of the Garnish Glory on August 12th and operating it without a passenger boat licence.
