One person has been taken to hospital and others are feared injured after an explosion at a pizza restaurant in Edinburgh today.

Lothian and Borders police say the explosion took place at Mamma's American Pizza Company in Edinburgh's Grassmarket area.

A spokeswoman said the explosion may have been caused by a gas cannister. She said staff were in the restaurant opening up at the time of the explosion.

She said one person has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with burns and that it is likely other staff members will be treated for shock.

It is not yet known how much damage has been caused to the restaurant and whether other buildings may have to be evacuated.
