Kevin Sutherland defeated fellow American Scott McCarron and picked up the $1 million first-place prize in Sunday's final of the $5.5 million Match Play Championships.

After a week that featured one upset after another, the championship match at the La Costa Resort and Spa pitted the Sutherland against the 45th-seeded McCarron.

Little-known Sutherland, the 62nd seed, topped off a 36-hole final day with a one-up victory over McCarron for the first tournament win of his career.

In the consolation match, Brad Faxon beat Paul Azinger in 19 holes.
