Iarnrod Eireann has begun an internal investigation into an accident at Kilkenny railway station yesterday in which 10 people suffered minor injuries.

Over 100 passengers were on the Dublin-Waterford train when the engine powering the train was in collision with the carriages as it was being shunted just after 1.30 p.m.

Ten people were taken to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny. Nine were released after treatment for cuts and bruises and one was admitted but was reported not seriously injured.

Ten others were treated at the scene and continued their journey to Waterford by coach.

Mr Larry Dineen, business and development manager with Iarnrod Eireann, said that thankfully there had been no serious injuries. He said normal rail services from the station resumed and all trains ran on time. Neither the locomotive nor the rolling stock was damaged.
