Cricket:Sachin Tendulkar was denied a hundred in cruel fashion as a poor lbw decision provided England with their first breakthrough on the third day of the second npower Test.

Tendulkar hit 91 at Trent Bridge before being adjudged leg before wicket playing no stroke at Paul Collingwood's medium pace.

Umpire Simon Taufel deemed that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps but television replays showed his error of the judgment.

Tendulkar trudged off in disbelief, having shared a 96-run stand with Sourav Ganguly.

India were 378 for four, an advantage of 180, with Ganguly in imperious form on 70.

In fact, Ganguly's biggest discomfort came when on 65 he had to call for treatment for cramp.

Despite having the use of the new ball, Michael Vaughan's pace attack could not make the necessary early breakthrough.

India began the day on 254 for three and although Ryan Sidebottom went narrowly past Tendulkar's outside edge on a couple of occasions and also went up for a leg before appeal, the patient approach of the tourists' batsmen continued to frustrate their opponents.

Left-hander Ganguly survived what was technically a chance in the first over of the day when short-leg Alastair Cook got a hand on a clip to leg off Chris Tremlett.

It was not long before Ganguly found the middle of his bat, however, as a skilful glide through point raced to the boundary and a hook cleared the rope at deep square leg in one Tremlett over.

Tendulkar was fairly sedate in comparison, facing every ball in a Sidebottom sequence of 8-5-7-0, but dictated to spinner Monty Panesar by drilling a four through extra-cover which travelled at head height before bouncing a couple of times on its way past the rope.
