Gardaí investigating the suspicious death of a Polish national, who died following a house party in Limerick, have not yet established whether his death was caused by a fall or a serious assault.
Dariusz Wiskowski was pronounced dead at 8am on Easter Monday, several hours after he was rushed to hospital following an incident at a house in the Castletroy area of the city.
The 26-year-old man had been attending a party in the Hawthorns estate of Brierfield in Castletroy, when he was discovered at the foot of the stairs.
Friends brought the injured man to the house he was renting in the same estate and the emergency services were called at about 1am on Monday morning.
He was rushed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where he died a number of hours later. Preliminary postmortem results revealed he was the victim of a serious assault. However, those attending the party have told gardaí he also fell down the stairs.
It is understood it will take further analysis of the postmortem results to determine whether or not Mr Wiskowski, who had a number of marks on his body consistent with an assault, died as a result of the fall or the assault.
Supt John Kerin, leading the investigation, said: "We don't know yet when these results will be available - it could be a couple of weeks or it could be sooner," he said. He described the investigation as a "slow process", as interpreters are required as gardaí interview people from the party - most of whom are either Polish or Lithuanian.
A single man, Mr Wiskowski worked as a forklift driver in Annacotty, Co Limerick. Arrangements are being made with the Polish embassy to have his remains flown home for burial.
