However, they did not award the 100m gold to Thanou who, along with reigning 200m men’s champion Kostas Kenteris, was banned from the 2004 Olympics in Athens after missing an out-of-competition drug test on the eve of those Games.

"The IOC believes we have a strong moral case and good legal case for that," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams. "She (Thanou) disgraced herself and the Olympic movement by avoiding three doping tests."

Thanou, who was banned from competing in the 2008 Beijing Games for bringing her sport into disrepute, is joined as a silver medallist by Jamaican Tanya Lawrence, who moves up from third. Merlene Ottey, who competed for Jamaica at the time and later raced for Slovenia, is lifted to bronze.

“The reallocation of the medals for the 4 x 400m relay and 4 x 100m relay, where Jones’s teams placed first and third respectively, is still pending the outcome of an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS),” an IOC statement read.
