A special tribute award was presented to actor Ingrid Craigie for her contribution to Irish theatre at the 10th Irish Times Theatre Awards in Dublin last night.
The best actor award went to Owen Roe for his performances as Petruchio in the Rough Magic production of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, as Director in the Gate production of Catastrophe by Samuel Beckett, and as Helge in the Gate production of Festen, a dramatisation by David Eldridge.
The best actress award went to Jane Brennan for her performance as Alice in the Abbey Theatre production of Alice Trilogy by Tom Murphy.
Declan Conlon was presented with the best supporting actor award for his performance as Michel Aleksandrovich Rakitin in the Abbey Theatre production of A Month in the Country, by Ivan Turgenev, in a version by Brian Friel.
The best supporting actress award went to Mary Murray for Al in the Abbey Theatre production of Alice Trilogy.
Atom Egoyan received the best director award for the Gate Theatre production of Eh Joe by Samuel Beckett. Best set designer award went to Sabine Dargent for the B*spoke production of Hysteria by Terry Johnson and for the Druid Theatre production of The Walworth Farce by Enda Walsh.
Monica Frawley received the best designer: costume award for the Rough Magic production of The Taming of the Shrew, while the late Rupert Murray received the best designer: lighting award for the Gate Theatre productions of Catastrophe and Play by Samuel Beckett, and for the Rough Magic production of The Taming of the Shrew.
The Rough Magic company itself received the best production award for The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Lynne Parker.
The best opera production award went to Wexford Festival Opera for Transformations, directed by Michael Barker-Caven.
Playwright Tom Murphy was presented with the best new play award for his Alice Trilogy, produced by the Abbey Theatre.
The judges' special award went to the Fishamble company for Whereabouts and its imaginative use of Temple Bar to create innovative site-specific theatre.
